A Local Hero's Profile

Most people would describe heroes as those who sacrifice their personal comforts to live and die for special causes.

At this day and age, heroes come in different shapes and sizes. For me, they are not just of the political kind that we always hear of on television and read about on the papers. Heroism can also be seen in people who show great passion in whatever fields they are in, in those who go beyond themselves, strive to spark change and inspire their fellow.

I believe my dad is one of them. As a husband to my mother, and a father to us siblings, yes he is our hero. But there is more to him than just the sacrifices he does as the head of our family.

First and foremost, he is a hero to those who suffer the unbearable pain of ailing gums and teeth. As a dentist by profession, he is the superman who will always be ready to save his patients when they've had too much sweets to eat and forget to brush their teeth at night. Not to mention, further to his private practice, he also sets off to offer his services for free in various dental mission initiatives. This is his worthwhile way of using his profession to help the less fortunate members of the community.

Second, my dad is a leader in all sorts of fields. He has headed developmental programs of the local chapter of the Philippine Dental Association, where he served as President. He was also President and is currently active member of Rotary Club, where he takes part in the implementation of goodwill projects for various sectors of the society.

Third, my dad has been most notable for his contributions to sports in the province. He has founded the LITAKEM Ilocos Sur Badminton Club (LISBC). Through this initiative, the Ilocos Sur Badminton Center was built. This badminton hub stands to house enthusiasts who come together with their friends to play leisure and competitive games of the sport.

My dad has also founded TARAYEM, an organization of passionate runners in the community. What started as a hobby and a practice for personal well-being has now become the advocacy that he envisions to share with the community. Through his selfless sharing of his time, expertise and love for the sport, he has created several venues for people to also experience the transformative power of running as a sport, a hobby and a community-building activity.

Having finished seven marathons (42km) and three ultramarathons (43km and up) to date, my dad has established for himself a record that only highly-determined, dedicated and disciplined people can achieve. This has allowed him to inspire people to also embrace such virtues and has given him the credentials to be considered a master of the craft. He has then organized several running events and races that drew people to love the sport and practice healthy lifestyles, alongside. Now, given the prevalence of the sport in the province, I believe my dad has been successful in realizing his noble vision.

At the end of the day, heroes are those that move us to live for something bigger than our own dreams for ourselves. While most men of his age are primarily dedicated to making money and building their own estates, my dad has profoundly shown me the greater fulfillment that comes from pursuing one's passion and initiating relevant causes that benefit the community, even those that do not necessarily involve money in the process. Most of my dad's achievements are actually fruits of pro bono work and his utmost dedication to effect change.

As a witness to all his benevolent contributions to the community, I will always live by the example of my dad.
After 8 weeks of marathon training, finally the green day came.... It was a nice time to run once again the most prestigious marathon event of the country.

Game plan: To finish the race in 4 hours and 50 minutes. How did I arrive in this figure? I studied the race route of my previous marathon (Condura Run for the Dolphins) and compared with the new route of Milo marathon. In my assessment, the race route of Condura is more difficult than that of Milo. I’m quite confident that I will be able to beat my Condura time of 4 hours and 57 minutes.

After my warm up drills, I found myself inside the 42K corral chatting with runner friends. At exactly 4:09 AM I was already crossing the starting line with my running buddy Edward. When we reach Km 5, my Garmin watch keeps on beeping due to my high heart rate. I know that it signals that my body have not been fully rested during the past days prior to the race day. I haven’t experience this during my training days. I can’t increase my pace since I was bothered by the heart rate alarm that keeps on beeping. I keep myself relax by maintaining an average pace of about 6; 40 min/km till kilometer 21.

To make the story short, as I was nearing kilometer 30 the agony started. I begin to slow down and I feel exhausted. It’s good that Edward was still running with me despite the fact that I repeatedly said to him that he may go ahead but he said we will finish the race together. Before we finish the third loop, we were already doing run-walk strategy.

Then came the final stretch of Roxas Blvd. It was again the longest distance of the race because of too much exhaustion. The heat of the sun, the temperature was like rubbing salt to an injury. Walking is more conducive than running during this moment. Time is of the essence, I need to go to beat my previous marathon time. Finally at kilometer 38, I gave up my goal time. All I wanted is just to finish the race. I had no cramps in my legs but I was too tired to speed up.

Finally, after 5 hours and 7 minutes I found myself in the finish line. Thanks God I made it again! My time may not be impressive but I’m lucky enough I have no injuries after the race.

"Five marathons have been conquered, a lot of lessons have been learned....and most of all a lot of running friends have been found along the way."

"Marathons are addictive; you will do it again and again no matter what it brings..."

My 8 Weeks Marathon Training

Almost a year ago when I finished my first marathon during the 33rd Milo Eliminations(July 5, 2009) in Manila wherein I registered a time of sub- six hours (5:44 to be exact). It was a grueling experience but worth remembering! As they say, first love never dies! When I did my second marathon in October during the 1st Quezon City International Marathon I finished the race with a time of 5 hours and 29 minutes. It was a better experience than my first! Last December 20, 2009, our running group TARAYEM had our marathon which we started at Merge Pt., Bantay, Ilocos Sur to San Juan, I. Sur back and forth and I ended the run in 4 hours and 52 minutes with a distance of 42.305 kilometers. I did my fourth marathon last February 7, Condura Run for the Dolphins and I finished the race with a time of 4 hours 57 minutes with a registered distance of 42.400 kilometers. Yes i did! I finished four 42 when I was 42 years old!

And the rest is history...

Come July 4, 2010 will be the 34th Milo Eliminations in Manila. I will be joining again and I hope this time I will be included in the list of finishers (sub 5 hours) and will get 42k medal. Seven weeks to go before the 4th of July, seven weeks of marathon training. Seven weeks of patience, discipline, focus and dedication....

Last Saturday, November 14, 2009 I posted another milestone in my running career when we had our long run which started from Merge point to Banaoang View-deck back and forth. We started our run at 5:06 AM. After running for 2:05:09 hours, my watch registered a distance of 21 km with an average pace of 5:56 mins/km. Nine (9) minutes faster than my previous record. (Whew!)

Congratulations to me!!!!

Start of an Unending Process

After two weeks of recovering from my second marathon, I can feel that my body has fully (?) recovered from aches and pains which the full Mary has inflicted. I have already started my easy short runs a week after October 18 with my spouse. The running fever has again invaded me.

Running a marathon is addictive! Once you have started doing it you can no longer say no to it. It has a secret ingredient that every runner enjoys that no matter what it brings. Indeed running is full of mystery in itself. I cannot explain why we keep on running, enjoying every step, pushing ourselves to maximum, punishing ourselves, yet the more pain, the better we become.

Started my daily workouts last week, speed works, tempo runs and 26 km run last November 7. For this week I did easy runs, 10k race pace, speed intervals and 21k long run with a time of 2:05:21 hours, whew! What a feeling!
Come December 20, 2009, my group TARAYEM (Metro Vigan Runners Club) will be having our 42.195 run which will start at Merge point in Bantay, Ilocos Sur to San Juan, Ilocos Sur back and forth..

To date I have already logged more than a thousand kilometres since I started running October last year. One year has passed and lot of stories to tell and to treasure.
Running indeed has no ending, the process is just continuous, it always the start of an unending process......

My 2nd Full Mary....

Took a quick shower, ate some boiled eggs, noodles, banana, and hydrated myself with water and Gatorade. After an hour of preparation, my group headed to QC Memorial Circle....

Upon arriving at the starting area, had some glimpse with some runner bloggers and noticeably the presence of Kenyans doing their warm up drills. I saw familiar faces that I once met during the Milo eliminations last July. I bumped on my running buddy Steve Mendoza a.k.a. Runningchilipepper, had a brief chat with him before the stretching exercises. We wished each other good luck. Then the countdown before the race begins, five...four...three...two...one, go!!!!

I started the race following the 5 hours and 30 minutes pacers with my Kumpadre- Edward Villareal who ran his first marathon. Our run was relaxed hearing the stories about running by our pacers Arman and company from Team Hardcore. We exchange ideas with no specific topics, anything under the sun just to calm down our nerves in our leg muscles.

Then we reached East Fairview wherein we made a right turn in a subdivision. After a while we noticed a lot of soldiers in full battle gear that signifies our presence at “La Mesa Eco-Park”, wow... it was really nice to run with nature view, inhaling fresh air that somewhat rejuvenates my exhausted lungs. The scenic view somehow distracts my attention to the hilly course. I took some videos using my cell phone to capture the memories of the race. Just before the turn around, I met Bards, a.k.a. Banana Running and we exchanged greetings.

After a while I felt stomach discomfort maybe due to over hydration but as minutes go by, the uneasiness persists and I can feel, I know that it’s a call of nature...oh men! I have to leave organic souvenir to this historic La Mesa Dam! After a quick hide in the bushes, I was able to relieve myself as I shouted success! Thanks to Edward for he acted as lookout and waited patiently on the road.

Then we finally finished the nature course of La Mesa Dam going to the polluted air of Lagro, Novaliches. Here you can see a lot of vehicles around passing, lot of runners walking, water-less water stations! This time we saw one of our team mates, Jessie having his walk breaks. I shouted, Jess sabay na tayong tatlo. The absence of water at water stations really made runners fuming mad at the race organizers. Its good thing I had a chance to see “Michael of Second Wind Running Store” who acted as support group for their team. When he saw me he immediately handed water and Pocari sweat, thanks a lot Michael!! He never hesitated to offer us help along the way.

Upon reaching Fairview, I told Edward to go on. This time sunog na si Jessie. Edward is not keen on leaving us but I told him it’s okay just move on and enjoy the race cause I need to motivate Jessie who is in distress. He was about to give up but I told him we must finish the race and disregard his goal time. We did a run-walk strategy just to ease the pain that he was experiencing. Thanks God my legs were still in running condition. We reached Mc Donald’s Fairview as my sister Carole was anxiously waiting for us. It was a nice brother and sister reunion on the road. She pampered us with Gatorade and ice tea. After a brief chat, she wished me good luck and we bid goodbye and continued our quest.

Km 30 to the Finish Line... As we continued running, I remembered the words of one runner friend George Corpuz “that the race begins at kilometre 30”! Indeed he was right, my knees started to slow my strides, my mind kept on pushing my body, pushing my legs to respond. As kilometres go by the leg pains started to develop, the intensity increases when I try to speed up. At this point, I was running alone, with no running buddy on my side, no one to talk to, and no one to lean on. I kept telling myself to go on, to enjoy every moment, to feel the pain positively, to bear the burden. I was praying hard that God will help me realize my mission. Then all of a sudden, the pacers for 5:30 hours (Team Hardcore) are on my side uttering words of encouragement, motivating every struggling runner along the way. Then I can visibly see the three angels of Quezon Memorial Circle indicating my nearness to the finish line. As we entered the circle I was able to maintain running with the pacers hoping to sustain the pace. The agony started when we reach North Avenue going to SM North where I can no longer lift my legs to move on. The pacers left me because I can no longer run. I was crying then hoping to release the much needed adrenaline left in my system. I kept telling myself that I can do it but I need to be patient, willing to give my best shot. As I made my turn around at SM North my legs slowly giving in, wanted to surrender, can no longer push to my inner limits. Oh my God, so near yet so far! The misery has elevated along the Trinoma turn around point. Here you can see runners turned walkers. Then as I patiently making my last moves, I finally saw the 41 km marker and I know that I will be running my longeeeeest one kilometre ever. As I crossed the wide street approaching the finish line, I felt relieved, the feeling of distress vanished, and my tears were flowing involuntarily. I thank God for helping me all throughout the race; He was my invisible running buddy. "Tears streamed down my face as I crossed the finish line. I was a new person, a runner, a marathoner”.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

This day was scheduled to be our last longest run training for the marathon. The distance is set not less than 30 kilometers and we are set to start at 4:30AM. But because of unavoidable circumstances that I need to attend the night before, I slept late almost 12 midnight and need to wake up before 4AM. My gosh, I think I cant make it, puyat na ako... I texted my running friends that I'm not sure If I can go with them for the long run. Nevertheless, I still set my alarm at 4:45AM and decided to just run a half marathon. The route was Merge Pt to Pandan, Caoayan back and forth(10km) then Merge Pt. to Banaoang bridge back and forth(approximately 20.5 km). Luckily, 3 of my running friends(Mike, Galo, Carolino) will also go just for 21km and we met at exactly 5:30 AM at Merge Pt. Then after a few minutes of warm up, we started to run and decided not to wait for the runners who went to Pandan earlier coz they are faster runners than we are. Before reaching the turn around point(new Banaoang bridge) I told the group that we will have photo sessions in the new bridge. So we had our picture taking then after few minutes we ran back to Merge pt. My Polar watch registered a distance of 20.9 km in 2:19:17 hours.

September 26, 2009

Time to rest for the long run tomorrow....

September 25, 2009

One of our newbie runner (Tsong Steve) eyeing his first 21km for QCIM came early. Unfortunately, only one of them came. We started to run at 5:33 AM. Our newbie friend(Boying) was able to cope up with our pace from kilometer 1 to 7. Then after a while he started to slow down so we decided (me, mike and sir audie) to go slow so he could maintain his pace with us. He kept on telling that we just go ahead but I told him that we will finish the run together just to motivate him to keep on running. After reaching 10 kilometers, we decided to have walk breaks and hydrate ourselves. Then I told the group to add 3 kilometers more so we resume our run at a slower pace. We finished our run in 1:28:41 hours with a distance of 14.2 kilometers.

September 23, 2009

Distance covered 7 km in 48:17 minutes...

September 22 Easy Run

I started my daily run at 5:30AM with my running buddy(my spouse) then after few minutes, got stomach discomfort and its getting worse as i increase my pace. We started our run at Merge Pt. in Bantay, Ilocos Sur going Cabugao, Ilocos Sur with the hardcore runners of TARAYEM, Doc Lymuel, Julius Lagasca, Eddie Espiritu, Jess Ancheta, Mike Peredo and me took off at exactly 5:00 AM. The distance registered in my Polar watch 26.81km with a time of 2:54:34 hours with an average pace of 06:40 mins/km. The run was great especially the recovery breakfast prepared by Julius Savella. Julius is the best! Thanks God we were able to finish the course with no blisters nor injury. The best thing that happened? I was able to shed off 1800 calories during that awesome run!

September 20 Long Run
